About how much would it cost to have a calligrapher address 100 wedding invitations (front only, no return)? I’m just looking for a ballpark figure.
I should have specified – someone asked my mom to do theirs, and she wants to know what is reasonable to charge. She did mine for free 🙂
$5 an invitation? Geez, that’s outrageous! It’s much cheaper to find someone locally who does calligraphy than to go with one of the internet companies that obviously scams people. ($5 an invite just amazes me. I wouldn’t want to pay that either!)
I’m paying $225 for 150 invitations (outside AND inside envelopes). It works out to be $1.50 per invitation.

2009 Oct 27 2…it’s so not worth it – No one pays attention to that stuff. I say get some labels and save yourself some money. You can get a pack of labels for less than $5 bucks.

2009 Oct 27 3I’ve heard it can be anywhere between $2 and $5 an invitation. It is quite pricey, so instead, what I did – I found a fancy font on the computer and ran the envelopes through a printer. It looked awesome, and it didn’t cost much (just the ink it will use..and of course, your time).

2009 Oct 27 5I dont know where you live, but in alabama, I found a lady that did them for 1 dollar and invite. Imho, there was no need to spend anymore money, so I just addressed them all myself in my best handwriting with a fine point black sharpie. No complaints so far. And if people want to complain that they werent done by a calligrapher, tell them they are welcome to pay for it.

2009 Oct 27 6If your mom wants to be "low-cost", figure out how long it would take her to do the work and multiply that by $7 to $10 per hour plus a little bit for the ink she is using up (how much would a new pen or jar of ink cost her?).
I’ve heard of some people that charge per line fees or per envelope fees.
I bought a kit and am teaching myself to do it 🙂

2009 Oct 27 8Your mom must have GREAT penmenship skills!
The amount per invite depends on how many words. I have included a link of one professional calligrapher.
I hope it helps!

2009 Oct 27 9I looked into this myself, and decided against it when I discovered that calligraphers of any worth charged $5-$10 per invitation (not counting envelops; same price applies). I would suggest you go with a friend or family member who has very pretty handwriting. If they’ll do it as a wedding gift that’s great, if not pay them a small fee for the service.
Congratulations and Good Luck!
